The second version is titled ‘Of Charlemagne’ (original name De Carolo Magno) and is thought to be authored by Notker the Stammerer, who is referred to in related publications as Monk of Saint Gall. The first version is titled ‘Life of Charles’ (original name Vita Caroli) and is written by Einhard. The book Two Lives of Charlemagne contains two different biographies of Charlemagne, who ruled a large swathe of western Europe during the 8th and 9th century AD. The reader will be able to get a summation of his lifetime achievements as well as a sense of plebeian life in medieval Europe by reading through the two biographies in discussion. As a result of his contributions in various fields, his reign was properly called the Carolingian Renaissance. By closely associating himself with the Papacy, he helped spread the Christian message to much of Europe. We learn from the two biographies that Charlemagne was instrumental in the spread of culture and arts to all corners of his kingdom. Charlemagne, translated into English as Charles the Great, was the King of the Franks, who expanded his empire to as further south as Italy.

Don’t sell me a book that’s supposed to be about why we fall for fraudulent influencers and then tell me stories about how McFarland spent so much of his company’s money on private jet flights that they couldn’t afford decent office furniture. But if your book is going to be primarily about Fyre, say it’s a book about Fyre. Fyre is an interesting story, but since Bluestone not only wrote about Fyre for Vice Media AND served as Executive Producer for the Fyre Netflix doc, it feels a bit like she’s decided she’s gonna ride the Fyre train for as long as she can. Unfortunately, this book is about 80% focused on Fyre Festival and Fyre Media CEO Billy McFarland’s pre- and post-Fyre businesses.ĭon’t get me wrong. I felt like having a better understanding of how and why people fall for online scammers would help me in my work, as well as making for some interesting reading material. The subtitle of Hype is “How Scammers, Grifters, and Con Artists Are Taking Over the Internet - and Why We’re Following.” As someone who has done a fair bit of work around the topic of scams in my day job, both in terms of raising awareness of specific scams and trying to each people how to avoid online scams, I’ve become very interested in the general topic of scams. Hype by Gabrielle Bluestone is a slightly misleading, incredibly rambling, but ultimately enjoyable book. 5/9/2023 0 Comments Stephen fry greek myths'One is beautiful, serene, powerful, mysterious,' says Stephen. As a result, it's no surprise that the fantastic beasts which inspire him the most come from ancient Greek culture, describing it as a 'dead heat' between Pegasus and Cerberus. Why do we create fantastic beasts? 'This range of countervailing emotions are ones that mythology, story-telling, fairy-tales and more have always comforted and alarmed us with. 'I think the stories of mythical beasts are so compelling because of their mixture of fear, dread, excitement and comfort,' Stephen explains to the Museum. And over the years, I've reviewed it twice: once in 2017, and then again in 2018 because my first review didn't do the book justice. I should have kept count, but I believe I've now read Goodbye Stranger 8 times (including the time right before this review). But my opinions on Goodbye Stranger began to change as I re-read it. As I discussed in this Thursday Thoughts blog post, I did not like Goodbye Stranger when I first read it in 2015 (when it came out). It's written by Rebecca Stead, who is also the author of First Light, Newbery medalist When You Reach Me, Liar & Spy, Bob , and The List of Things That Will Not Change. Goodbye Stranger is my favorite book of all time. Oh my, I don't even know where to start, but I have to start somewhere. |
